Victorian House
Cambridge
The formal living room spaces on the front did not provide a relaxing, welcoming feel because of the proximity of the road with no view to the rear garden from these rooms. There were a couple of outbuildings that were poorly connected to the house and contributed to the ‘bitty’ feel as you moved through the house. The utility and typical back of house spaces did not provide sufficient storage and were not in the right place.
Their requirement was for a large kitchen dining living space that connected the house to the garden and incorporated the outbuildings as playroom/teenage space for their family. The existing hall was narrow and cramped with the stair case dominating; by moving the stair into the now opened up kitchen, the hall is more generous and has the benefit of light and a view through to the rear garden through the full height glazed opening at the opposite end of the entrance.
We opened up the rear external wall and extended the space to the side of this to create the new dining kitchen space, which allowed us to connect the outbuildings into functional spaces and overall facilitated a living space connected to the garden filled with natural light throughout the day.
